Security Scare at Orlando International Airport Holds Up Flights

Police said the lithium-ion battery had been inside a camera and packed in a bag. Passengers were asked to de-plane and people waiting at their gates were forced to pass through TSA security screening again.

Bomb-sniffing dogs were brought in but authorities quickly determined that no shots had been fired and that there was no danger to the public.

After an investigation, the battery responsible for the incident was reported to have been a camera battery, which is legal aboard flights.

The bag was smoldering; no one hurt.

Many travelers who were startled by the commotion had already evacuated the terminals and needed to be re-screened at the security checkpoint, causing extremely long lines and delays.

"Others hearing the luggage being dropped, stanchions falling, and rapid movement mistook the sounds as gunfire and within seconds a spontaneous evacuation of the main terminal occurred", Brown said in the letter. Johnson said airport officials will resume normal operations once authorities determined that the checkpoints could safely be reopened.

Mike Robinson, a traveler headed to Dallas, told the Orlando Sentinel he heard a loud pop at a security checkpoint.

"Now, they're bringing people out of their gates, off-loading them to be screened again", he said.

Robinson said his flight was at 7.30pm, but it would most likely be delayed.

Orlando International Airport posted on Twitter that the incident was being investigated and details would be released when they became available. While rumors circulated online, the Police Department posted a message on Twitter denouncing any danger.
