Selena Gomez Chokes Up While Describing 'Life or Death Struggle' With Lupus

Selena Gomez says she's feeling stronger following a recent kidney transplant - and revealed the consequences might've been grave if she didn't get the operation when she did.

A day after performing at the AMAs, Selena Gomez has taken to the stage once again to discuss her ongoing battle with Lupus.

"I am really honored to be here with all of you guys tonight, my Lupus community", she said.

The 25-year-old finished her speech by reiterating the need for increased awareness around the disease.

"My doctors told me I had lupus nephritis, one of the most common complications of lupus".

"I am supporting the Lupus Research Alliance because they are getting results and that's what give people hope", she said at the gala. Lately, she's been promoting her single "Wolves", a collaboration with EDM producer Marshmello.

'Maybe I wasn't necessarily really good at knowing what that meant so it actually got to a point where it was life-or-death, ' she said. "And I am doing quite well now", explained Gomez.

The singer revealed in September that she was recovering from a kidney transplant after her friend Francia Raisa, the star of "The Secret Life of the American Girl", donated a kidney to her. Two months ago, she wrote in an Instagram post that she had undergone a kidney transplant over the summer.

Luckily for the triple-threat star, her best friend Francia Raisa came up with a solution that's since rid her of arthritis and low energy while guaranteeing that there's only a 3 to 5 percent chance of her Lupus returning.

"Something as monumental as an organ transplant shouldn't be the best treatment option available", Gomez said.

Though Gomez assured that she is "very well now", she warned about the dangers of not taking medical diagnoses seriously, like she initially did. "So that none of us are alone, especially the young women that I have grown up with and heard many, many stories".

If you'd like to find out more about lupus and how you can support those who are dealing with the disease, head over to the Lupus Research Alliance for more information.
