South Korea and China will peacefully solve the DPRK issue

South Korea and China will peacefully solve the DPRK issue

"The combined drills are to present our resolve and will to deter North Korea's provocations and retaliate if provoked", Yonhap quoted a South Korean official as saying.

Tensions are high after the North's sixth and most powerful nuclear test in September, along with a series of ballistic missile launches in recent months.

After arriving in Tokyo on Sunday, Trump warned that "no dictator" should underestimate the United States, in a thinly veiled reference to North Korea.

'Reckless remarks by an old lunatic like Trump will never scare us or stop our advance, ' the North's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

South Korea and the United States on Saturday kicked off a joint naval exercise in the Sea of Japan involving three US aircraft carriers amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Following the bilateral exercise, the USA vessels also linked up with seven South Korean warships, "the first time that three US aircraft carriers have joined together at close range for a joint exercise with South Korea", the Yonhap news agency reported.

Nuclear-powered carriers USS Ronald Reagan, USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt are taking part in the exercises, which will continue until Tuesday in the Sea of Japan, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.

The exercises will also involve 11 U.S. Aegis ships and seven South Korean naval vessels, including two Aegis ships. The Aegis technology refers to missile tracking and guidance.

They also agreed to a peaceful resolution to the North Korea problem through dialogue.

In this image released by the U.S. Navy, the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, flanked by South Korean destroyers, from left, Yang Manchun and Sejong the Great, and the U.S. Navy's Wayne E. Meyer and USS Michael Murphy, transit the western Pacific Ocean Wednesday, May 3, 2017. The US carriers will also participate in separate exercises with three Japanese destroyers on Sunday, according to Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force.

In recent months, North Korea has tested intercontinental ballistic missiles that could reach the United States mainland with further development and has conducted its most powerful nuclear test. It also flew two new midrange missiles over Japan and threatened to launch them toward Guam, a U.S. Pacific territory and military hub.
