Storm To Hit Lakshadweep Islands On Dec 2

Fishermen along and off Lakshadweep Islands and off South Kerala coasts have been advised not to venture into the sea during next 48 hours while fishermen off South Tamil Nadu coast have been warned against venturing into sea during the next 24 hours.

Four persons were killed when trees fell on them in different places in Kanyakumari district, officials said.

As a deep depression intensified into Cyclone Ockhi on Thursday afternoon, the IMD stepped up its measures to issue warnings across platforms about heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours regions in the Lakshadweep islands and parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The cyclonic storm, which lay centered about 340 km west-northwest of Galle in Sri Lanka, 60 km south of Kanyakumari, 120 km southwest of Thiruvananthapuram and 480 km east-south east of Minicoy in Lakshadweep, is likely to move west-north westwards towards Lakshadweep Islands and intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during next 24 hours.

The intensity of rains will, however, start reducing once the weather system will start traveling towards the Arabian Sea, away from Kerala coast.

Two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams were deployed in the affected areas of Tamil Nadu on Thursday to carry out relief and rescue operations. "Due to this heavy rains are expected in southern districts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala", the IMD said in a statement. In the landslide prone central hill areas, measures have been taken to evacuate people, disaster management officials said. It is also gearing up for Humanitarian Assistance that may be required due to the storm. The IMD recorded an "isolated very heavy rainfall" of 15 cm in Aryankavu in Kollam district.

IMD Director in Chennai, S Balachandran said, "As far as fishermen are concerned those in Kanyakumari, Tuticorin, Rameswaram, have been asked not to venture out into sea till Dec 1 as wind speed will be 65-70 kmph".

The Meteorological bureau expects squally winds speed reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph to hit the Lakshadweep Islands during next 12 hours and increase thereafter with wind speeds rising to 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph from tonight.

Educational institutions remained closed in southern districts such as Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Viruthunagar and Thanjavur.
