The increasing burden of non communicable diseases in India

"On the other hand, the states that have had this transition more recently, such as the EAG states, now have rising risk for non-communicable diseases and also continue to have a high burden of infectious and maternal-child diseases".

Of the total disease burden in India measured as disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) DALYs, 61% was due to communicable, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional diseases (termed infectious and associated diseases in this summary for simplicity) in 1990, which dropped to 33% in 2016.

Outdoor air pollution was responsible for six per cent of the total disease burden in India in 2016, a new study has said at a time when thick smog hung low over Delhi-NCR, leaving residents gasping for breath.

In the worst affected states, over 2,750 cases of deaths or severe illnesses such as non-communicable diseases, chronic respiratory diseases and lower respiratory infections, per lakh pollution were reported past year, the study says.

The report was on Tuesday launched by Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, who called for the immediate tackling of high disease burden caused by malnutrition.

"We believe that the knowledge base developing out of the ongoing work of the State-level Disease Burden Initiative can serve as a significant public good, providing increasingly more nuanced and crucial inputs for improving health of all Indians", he said. The group comprises eight states - Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh Odisha, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan. "Punjab had 157 per cent higher per person burden from diabetes and 134 per cent higher burden from ischaemic heart disease", said the report. There were, however, continuing inequalities between states, with a range of 66.8 years in Uttar Pradesh to 78.7 years in Kerala for females, and from 63.6 years in Assam to 73.8 years in Kerala for males in 2016. According to the report, disease burden due to air pollution remained high in India between 1990 and 2016, as it caused non-communicable and infectious diseases such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and infections. "The findings show that the overall disease burden per person in some states of India is nearly twice as much as in some other states, and the burden rate due to the leading diseases ranges five to ten times between the states", said vice president Venkaiah Naidu on the occasion of the report launch.

The contribution of injuries to the total disease burden has increased in most states since 1990.

The report also notes that under-five mortality rate has decreased significantly in all states.

At the same time, malnutrition continued to be the single largest reason for health loss in India, according to the first state-level disease burden and risk factors estimates released by the Indian Council of Medical Research, Public Health Foundation of India and Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in collaboration with the health ministry.

The contribution of injuries to the total disease burden has increased in most states since 1990, affecting the young adults (15-39 years of age) the maximum.

Air pollution, which was the third largest risk factor in the country in 1990, moved to the second position in the year 2016.
