Theresa May accuses Russian Federation of election meddling, 'planting fake stories'

The British prime minister's remarks come after a United Kingdom parliamentary committee launched an investigation into the influence of "fake news" on last year's EU "Brexit" referendum and June's general election.

In an extraordinary attack, May warned of Kremlin attempts to "weaponise information" as she argued a Brexit trade deal would support Europe's commitment to free societies in the face of Russian threats to the global order.

Addressing the Lord Mayor's Banquet at the City of London's Guildhall last night, May told Moscow: "We know what you are doing".

In a major foreign policy speech at the Lord Mayor's Banquet at Mansion House in London, Mrs May warned the post-war global order was under unprecedented threat from states trying to "destabilise it for their own ends".

"We do not want to return to the Cold War, or to be in a state of perpetual confrontation", she said, adding there was "another way".

"The comprehensive new partnership we seek will underpin our shared commitment to open economies and free societies in the face of those who seek to undermine them", she said.

Massandra is a well-known winery in Crimea - seized by Russian Federation from Ukraine three years ago - which Vladimir Putin visited with Silvio Berlusconi in 2015.

She listed not just Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea, but its fomentation of conflict in southeastern Ukraine, its violations of European airspace, and "a sustained campaign of cyber espionage and disruption".

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has launched major criticism towards Russian president Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin for meddling in elections and its role in spreading "fake news".

She also accused Moscow of trying to "weaponise information" and planting fake stories to "sow discord in the West".

In her speech, she also said the authorities in Myanmar must take "full responsibility" for what "looked like ethnic cleansing" of the Rohingya people in Rakhine province.

"Russia can, and I hope one day will, choose this different path".

She stated that Russian Federation had underestimated the "resilience" of the Western democracies.

"The UK will do what is necessary to protect ourselves, and work with our allies to do likewise", she warned.

Meanwhile, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson faced questions after a photograph emerged of him alongside Joseph Mifsud, a Maltese academic who is caught up in the US investigation into Russian influence on the presidential election, amid allegations that he said he had access to "dirt" on Hilary Clinton.
