Trump must challenge Duterte's record at ASEAN summit in the Philippines

Harry Roque, the spokesman of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, said Russian Federation and Philippines may sign a deal to cooperate on electric power generation, adding there is a company that is promoting nuclear energy which likes to have business dealings with the Philippines. He said at the time: "I was really looking for a confrontation so I could kill".

Trump also expressed support for Duterte's war on drugs, which has been heavily criticized here and overseas for the deaths of thousands of Filipinos.

"One fight there, another here - at the age of 16, I killed someone".

He claimed he fatally stabbed the person "just over a look".

Late a year ago he admitted killing suspected criminals during his time as mayor of Davao City.

"It is fallacious reasoning for Duterte to accuse human rights groups and advocates of meddling in Philippine local affairs because the protection and promotion of human rights are global concerns as pronounced in worldwide conventions and even domestic legislation", the lawmaker said.

Since taking office in 2016, President Duterte and his administration have waged a lethal anti-drugs campaign that has resulted in widespread extrajudicial executions.

Trump, on an Asian tour since the start of the month, is expected to raise concerns before Duterte several issues concerning the region-including the rising tensions over North Korea's nuclear and missile programs and arrest Beijing's growing influence in the region worsened by territorial sovereignty issues involving the South China Sea.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, center, arrives for a meeting with President Donald Trump and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at the ASEAN Summit at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza, Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, in Manila, Philippines.

Randy Hultgren had called on Trump to highlight the human rights situation in the Philippines in his upcoming visit to Manila. He said the "logical thing to do is keep them close and not let Duterte flirt with China. In our struggle with China, we need all the friends when we can get".

In a separate statement on Thursday, Philippine Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said Duterte will endorse globalization and regional economic integration, policies that have also been promoted by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

White House aides have suggested that Trump's strategy has worked before, pointing to his interactions with Sisi.

Trump dismissed the notion that he buddied up to dictators.

"It shows I think that the two leaders were genuinely pleased to have finally met each other in person", Roque told reporters. "I don't care about human rights, believe me".

"We still prefer USA and Western equipment but they are very expensive". But given the administration's lack of credibility in raising human rights abuses, he said, they have pivoted to a different tack, focusing on worldwide attention.
