Trump renews barb at North Korean leader; Russian Federation accuses United States of provocation

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have flared anew after North Korea said it had successfully tested a new intercontinental ballistic missile on Wednesday in a "breakthrough" that put the US mainland within range of its nuclear weapons.

The US is trying to force Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear missile program.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov poured scorn on Washington's call to cut ties with North Korea and introduce new sanctions against it.

The air forces of the United States and South Korea are scheduled to hold a regular joint drill early next month with six U.S. F-22 Raptor stealth fighters taking part.

In a soon-to-be published interview he gave to Italian newspaper Libero, Lavrov cited the fact that Trump continued the previous administration's anti-Russian legislation, according to Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

"It's as if the recent actions of the United States are consciously directed to provoke Pyongyang towards other radical actions", Russia's top diplomat said.

Both will meet with U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Policy Joseph Yun and others officials and members of Congress. "The latest USA action seemed to be directed towards provoking Pyongyang into taking some rash action". US ambassador Nikki Haley told the U.N. Security Council meeting on Wednesday that Washington has asked China to cut off oil supply to North Korea, a drastic step that Beijing - the North's neighbor and sole major trading partner - has so far refrained from taking. "We have the impression that it was all done specially to get Kim Jong Un to "fly off the handle" and take another reckless step".

Lavrov said Haley's call for the world to isolate North Korea was wrong.

"We have repeatedly stated that the pressure of sanctions has been exhausted", he told journalists in the Belarusian capital, Minsk.

The United States earlier this year pressed for a full oil embargo on North Korea but dropped that demand following resistance from China and Russian Federation.
