Two Dead After Being Infected With Legionnaires' Disease, Illness Linked to Disneyland

Two Dead After Being Infected With Legionnaires' Disease, Illness Linked to Disneyland

In a statement to The Times, Dr. Pamela Hymel, chief medical officer for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, said health officials had informed them "there is no longer any known risk associated with our facilities".

The outbreak has sickened a total of 15 people, two of whom have died.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports Southern Nevada Health District officials say testing and monitoring of the hotel's water system is continuing, and recent tests show low to no presence of the bacteria.

A spokeswoman for the park also said as of Wednesday the towers have not been turned back on. Health officials said two of the three new cases involved individuals who visited Disneyland.

Legionnaires' disease is a respiratory illness which can be contracted from inhaling microscopic water droplets in mist or vapor. All the patients lived or had spent time in Anaheim and nine had visited Disneyland in September 2017.

Officials reported the victims were infected sometime between August and October, and range between the ages of 52 to 94.

Also, 13 out of the 15 patients were hospitalized and two, who had additional health issues, died. The investigation will continue so the Office of Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance staff members remain available to speak with guests who have questions, or might have been ill.
