Tyson to build $300M facility in Tennessee, create 1500 jobs

Tyson Foods announced plans Monday to build a $300 million chicken production and processing complex in western Tennessee after a almost identical proposal for development of poultry facilities in Tonganoxie was rejected by residents. The Arkansas-based company gravitated toward the investment in Humboldt, Tenn., and moved to a back burner pursuit of a large chicken operation in Kansas. In August, the chicken company announced the $84 million expansion of its facility in Union City and the creation of 300 jobs. The company estimates its total statewide annual impact for fiscal 2016, including payroll, grain purchases, utilities, property taxes and charitable contributions to be more than $313 million.

This will be Tyson's fifth location in the state and its second development in the state this year.

The new plant will produce pre-packaged trays of fresh chicken for retail grocery stores across the U.S. and is expected to process 1.25 million birds per week. When finished, the site has a planned processing capacity of 1.25 million birds/wk, with products made at the site sold in retail grovery stores in the U.S. It will include a processing plant, feed mill, hatchery, and other related operations.

After Tyson placed the Tonganoxie plant project on hold in September, Kansas officials attempted to interest the company in alternative locations in the state. The plant will be located within the Gibson County Industrial Park and the company will contract with area farmers to raise chickens.

"Consumer demand drives growth in the food and agriculture industry, and we have been aware throughout our own discussions with Tyson Foods that their expansion plans included multiple facilities in more than one state, so this announcement was not unexpected", spokeswoman Heather Lansdowne said in an emailed statement.

"We're grateful for the invitation to become part of Humboldt and Gibson County".
