United Nations urges global truce during Winter Olympics

In his words, "Only the United Nations member states can guarantee the athletes the safe passage to the Olympic Games".

The resolution, adopted with a bang of the gavel by Assembly President Miroslav Lajcak to loud applause, urges United Nations member states to observe the truce from seven days before the games begin on February 9 until seven days after the Paralympic Winter Games end on March 18. With the Olympic Truce resolution, the United Nation General Assembly is creating the conditions for all athletes to compete in peace.

It urged member states to observe the Olympic Truce, recalling the ancient Greek tradition of ekecheiria, from seven days before the Games begin on February 9 until seven days after the Paralympic Winter Games end on March 18.

"Just as the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul contributed to the dismantling of the eastern and western camps and the Cold War era, the Government could promote peace on the Korean peninsula through the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and Paralympics, and further promote peace and cooperation on the Korean Peninsula".

It also expressed expectation that the PyeongChang Olympics "will be a meaningful opportunity to foster an atmosphere of peace, development, tolerance and understanding on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia". "The Olympic Charter states the goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of humankind with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity", she said.

"I firmly believe that PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will help spread the message of peace through one of the few languages that has the power to unite people around the world, the graceful and universal language of sport".

Kim said she experienced "the same spirit and power" as a 10-year-old watching the South Korean and North Korean delegations jointly enter the arena at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

North Korean figure skaters Ryom Tae-Ok and Kim Ju-sik qualified for the pairs competition last month, however. "Indeed Pyeongchang represents perhaps the most honest effort to cross the frozen border between South and North and to foster a peaceful environment". Then as now, the Olympic Games are a symbol of hope and peace. "The Republic of Korea is ready to welcome the world".

The symbolic Olympic Truce resolution has been adopted every two years ahead of the summer and winter games since 1993.

Lee Hee Beom, president of the South Korean organizing committee, said the resolution signifies the General Assembly's "strong wish that Pyeongchang will provide the window of opportunity to foster an environment conducive to building and sustaining peace on the Korean peninsula, and in northeast Asia".

While in the USA, the minister will be engaged in a slew of promotional activities for the Olympics. This resolution, which Moon submitted during a meeting with International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach in September, was largely drafted by the South Korean government and was co-sponsored by more than 140 countries, including the US, China, Japan and Russian Federation. "Since North Korea at the moment has basically placed a moratorium on its nuclear weapons and missile programs, we need to be able to preemptively raise issues such as cancelling the South Korea-US joint military exercises", said Koo Kap-woo, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies.
