United States tourists arrested in Thailand over nude photo at historic temple

United States tourists arrested in Thailand over nude photo at historic temple

Police on Wednesday confirmed that two American men were arrested and fined 154 dollars each for baring their buttocks at Thai temples.

The men run an Instagram account called "Traveling Butts", and took their exposing ways a bit too far for Thailand authorities when their photo taken inside the Wat Arun temple spread on social media.

Travis and Joseph Dasilva, both 38, run the Instagram account "Traveling Butts", which features pictures of the couple exposing their butts at global locations.

Their Instagram account, @traveling_butts, which had more than 14,000 followers, has since been removed.

Pol Col Choenron Rimpadee, deputy spokesman of immigration police, said the two men admitted to taking down their trousers, bending over and posing for photos at the temple. "This is a reminder that everyone should have respect for Thai religion and culture".

Col. Choengron Rimpadee, a deputy spokesperson of the Thai immigration police, told the BBC they had kept close tabs on the butt bearers after the temple photo was posted.

The spokesman said the charge would not be a normal public indecency charge.

He said that police are awaiting court approval to charge the pair with computer crimes since the obscene content was posted online, which could lead to a maximum jail term of three years.

City Commissioner Nicole Murray-Ramirez says the men reached out to him for assistance and he is now talking to American authorities on what to do next.

"Though I am very disappointed in their actions, I am talking to USA government officials to see what assistance we can give them", Ramirez said.
