Woman must pay Katy Perry

Pop singer Katy Perry and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has been awarded $5m after a Los Angeles jury found that a restaurant owner intentionally interfered with the singer's attempts to purchase a former convent from the Archdiocese.

The ruling comes after Perry, 33, originally sought to buy the Los Feliz property from the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles for $14.5 million (£11 million) in 2015. Hollister has been told she must cover these costs, with $3.47m (£2.62m) owed to the archdiocese and $1.57m owed to Perry.

A Superior Court decision earlier this year cleared the way for Perry to finally buy the home, finding that the right to sell the property lay with the Archdiocese-and not the nuns.

An after-hours message left with Hollister's attorneys seeking comment was not immediately returned.

Hollister's lawyer Michael Geibelson told the court his client thought she had a correct and legal contract, and had not meant to cause either party harm.

"I don't think Dana Hollister did anything wrong as to either of these parties", Geibelson said during the trial, Abc news report.

The L.A. Times reports that the jury determined that Hollister, owner of Cliff's Edge in Silver Lake, "acted with malice, oppression or fraud" for undermining the sale of the hilltop property on Waverly Drive by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to Perry.

That might not be all that Hollister has to pay; a separate trial set to begin in December will determine whether punitive damages should be awarded to Perry and the church. Everything seemed to be going as planned until "two of the last five living sisters" from the convent claimed they owned the property and wanted to sell it to Hollister.
