Woman raises $78000 for homeless man who helped her buy petrol

A woman has raised over $50,000- and counting- for a homeless man who spent his last $20 to help her when she ran out of gas in Philadelphia.

A homeless man who gave his last $20 to ensure a motorist got home safe has had his kindness repaid thousands of times over thanks to a GoFundme page set up in his honour.

The GoFundMe.com campaign was started November 10 by 27-year-old Kate McClure after she said she ran out of gas on Interstate-95 and a homeless man named Johnny Bobbitt Jr. offered to walk a few blocks to buy her some. McClure was beginning to panic, but a homeless man came to her aid.

The man, a Marine Corps veteran named Johnny, told her it wasn't safe and told her to get back into her vehicle and lock the doors.

"Johnny did not ask me for a dollar, and I couldn't repay him at that moment because I didn't have any cash, but I have been stopping by his spot for the past few weeks", McClure wrote. Originally from North Carolina, he served in the Marines as an ammunition technician and his social media posts show him during happier times. Unfortunately, Bobbitt fell on hard times due to drug and money problems.

"One day, I stopped to see him and had a few things in a bag to give him, one of which was a box of cereal bars so he could have something that he could carry around and eat", McClure wrote. He said he moved to Philadelphia a year ago with plans to start a new job, but when things fell through, he became homeless.

With the money, McClure and D'Amico are hoping to give Johnny his "first and last month's rent at an apartment, a reliable vehicle, and 4-6 months worth of expenses".

According to a story originally published in the Philadelphia Inquirer, McClure said that she did not know what to do in that situation.

So far the duo has raised more than $38,000 to help get her selfless hero back on his feet.
