World Malaria Report 2017

World Malaria Report 2017

"Between 2015 and 2016, there were five million more malaria cases globally, and Rwanda saw the greatest increase in malaria cases, with almost a million people contracting the mosquito-borne disease, according to the World Malaria Report, released on Wednesday". Central America, Haiti and the Dominican Republic have also reported cases of the disease.

Last December, we noted a troubling shift in the trajectory of this disease.

Some of the challenges, said the report, that impeded these countries' abilities to stay on track and advance towards elimination include lack of sustainable and predictable global and domestic funding, risks posed by conflict in malaria endemic zones among many others. Progress appeared to have stalled. According to WHO's latest malaria report, the world is not on track to reach these critical milestones. And, in some countries and regions, we are beginning to see reversals in the gains achieved.

It also accounts for highest number of malaria deaths (331) in the southeast Asia region and less only to countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Although malaria case incidence has fallen globally since 2010, the rate of decline has stalled and even reversed in some regions since 2014.

"... India has successfully reduced its new malaria cases by one-third and crossed the malaria mortality targets of 2020", he tweeted.

Malaria deaths in India were only lower than those in WHO's Africa region where the figure soared to 33,997 for the Democratic Republic of Congo.

"We are at a crossroads in the response to malaria", said Dr. Pedro Alonso, director of the Global Malaria Program.

As WHO Director-General, achieving universal health coverage is my top priority. Meeting the global malaria targets will only be possible through greater investment and expanded coverage of core tools that prevent, diagnose and treat malaria. While we have made important headway, the pace of progress must be greatly accelerated if we are to reach our global malaria targets for 2020 and beyond.

Malaria can be fatal, and is transmitted by mosquito bites.

Spraying the inside walls of homes with insecticides is another effective way to prevent malaria. The estimated global tally of malaria deaths reached 445 000 in 2016 compared to 446 000 the previous year.

"Clearly, if we are to get the global malaria response back on track, supporting the most heavily affected countries in the African Region must be the primary focus", said Dr Tedros. The US$ 2.7 billion invested in 2016 represents less than half of that amount.

The choice before us is clear. In 2016, there were an estimated 216 million cases of malaria, an increase of about 5 million cases over 2015. "We hope this report serves as a wake-up call for the global health community".

"... Reasons for the slowdown differed across specific regions and countries, health officials said". But I am also convinced that this is a winnable battle. "'Malaria comes back with a vengeance"..."

"... "For the first time, we can confidently say that we have stopped making progress, ' says Pedro Alonso, the director of the Global Malaria Programme at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland".
