21-year-old student kills self at Osmania University, protest erupts

Tension prevailed on the campus of Osmania University in Hyderabad throughout the night with students staging violent protests following the suicidal death of a post-graduate student.

It may be known that this suicide happened less than 24 hours before the Opposition's grand alliance at Saroornagar to mobilize people against the government's alleged failure to provide jobs. Following the Telangana Unemployed Joint Action Committee's call for an OU bandh, the administration suspended classes and postponed the practical exam scheduled for Monday.

TJAC convener Prof Kodandaram and Congress leaders visited the campus in the evening. A suicide note purportedly found on the spot stated that he was ending his life as he feared he would fail in exams, police said. The note said, "I am not able to continue my studies and I am afraid I might fail in the examinations". Murali told his brothers to take care of his mother and wanted that the news of his suicide does not reach his mother. "So, I have chose to end my life". "I don't want mother to know about my suicide". The students refused to allow the police to shift the body of the deceased E Murali for postmortem, insisting on Rs 50 lakh ex-gratia.
