3rd day of ex-officer Michael Slager's sentencing wraps up

3rd day of ex-officer Michael Slager's sentencing wraps up

U.S. District Judge David Norton on Thursday made that determination in the April 2015 shooting of Walter Scott. Some shootings were justified; some were not. Scott's mother, Judy Scott, said through tears that her faith in God gives her the ability to forgive Slager.

Closing arguments from defense attorney Andy Savage and prosecutor Jared Fishman came after nightfall Wednesday evening.

Defense lawyers say Slager has accepted responsibility for the shooting. Slager, who is white, fired five times into Scott's back as he ran away.

Fishman for the prosecution said Slager did not mention a violent fight with Scott when he initially reported what happened.

The defense is arguing that Scott grabbed Slager's stun gun and had an altercation with him on the ground, which can not be clearly seen in the bystander's video.

A state murder trial ended last December with a hung jury, and state prosecutors dropped the murder case in exchange for the plea in federal court. He said it was "time to call it what it was - a murder", second-degree murder, specifically.

Hallimore testified during the State's murder trial in November of past year. It all started when Savage called Wilson as a witness without notifying prosecutors in advance.

The defense team believes that evidence bolsters Slager's self-defense claim.

"Our position is that the reasonableness of Mr. Slager's actions were appropriate until they weren't", Savage said.

He interviewed Slager in May of 2015.

Walter Scott in his Coast Guard days. Fishman said those statements aren't backed up by evidence.

He said his father was there for him, he supported him, and that he will never be able to see him graduate or play football. "My heart is destroyed because the way my father went was rough, and you only get one father, not two".

Scott added that he still has trouble sleeping at night.

Humpries said the "goal" of the department under former leadership was to stop eight drivers per day.

After the shooting, Slager picked up his stun gun and placed it next to Scott.

Still, Slager pleaded guilty in federal court to violating Scott's civil rights.

Slager faces life in prison and $250,000 in fines.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Anthony Imel returned to the stand and the defense used a tape measure to show how far away the cell phone video was shot from the scene, trying to prove it was too far to hear proper audio of the incident. He broke down the cell phone video frame by frame and explained that he could see that there was a fight between Scott and Slager, when they were on the ground. Earlier, Fredericks testified that he heard Scott say, "This is abuse" and "F*** the police". According to Hallimore, after filtering out noise, he could hear Slager telling Scott to let go of his taser.

On Tuesday, the judge allowed expert witnesses to testify about disputed audio and video recordings of the shooting. He concluded that Scott and Slager fought on the ground and engaged in a physical altercation prior to the shooting.

He also testified that he could see the taser fall behind Michael Slager.

"I miss my father everyday", he told a federal court in SC on Wednesday.

Monday was marked by the testimony of various government witnesses.

Prosecutors' first witness was the man who recorded the shooting on the way to his job at a barbershop. Santana testified that the shooting was unnecessary.

In addition, SLED agent Charles Ghent testified.

That's when Slager said he pulled the trigger.

The federal prosecution hammered in the fact that Scott was running away when the first shot was sacked and continued to run away until he fell.
