A Judge Issues An Arrest Warrant For A Former Argentinian President

But Kirchner, now a senator, has parliamentary immunity. Former Foreign Minister Hector Timerman was put under house arrest.

Her political clout has since faded with the victory of center-right President Mauricio Macri in elections later that year, but the populist firebrand now seeks a comeback as leading the opposition against Mr. Macri.

In a press conference frequently interrupted by applause from her supporters, she described Bonadio's main charge of "treason against the Fatherland" as "an insult to the intelligence of Argentines".

Argentina's ex-president Cristina Kirchner lashed out today at a judge's order seeking her arrest as "an excess that violates the rule of law". In response, she shut down the Secretariat of Intelligence, replacing it with the Federal Intelligence Agency in March 2015.

She has previously called the case an "absurdity", and pointed out that both she and her husband Nestor, the former president, were instrumental in pushing for an investigation into the attack.

"This accusation is based on an agreement ... that would allegedly allow Argentine judges to interrogate Iranian officials that Argentina claims were involved in that investigation", she said.

Kirchner told the press conference that the signing of the memorandum in 2012 "was an act of foreign policy that can not be prosecuted". Argentine prosecutors have alleged the attack was ordered by the government of Iran. For that to happen, two-thirds of the legislators must decide to remove Kirchner's immunity for an arrest.

Kirchner's leftist alliance in the Senate has a total of 32 seats, but only around a dozen senators are in the Kirchner camp.

The case is based on a complaint introduced by special prosecutor Alberto Nisman, who was found dead in his apartment in Buenos Aires on January 18, 2015.

Kirchner, who is facing several corruption charges from her time as president, is set to take a seat in the Senate next week.

The attack on the Jewish community center killed 85 people and injured a further 150, making it the deadliest bombing in the country's history. Iran denies any involvement.

The Mutual Israeli-Argentina Assocation (AMIA), a Jewish community centre in Buenos Aires, was blown up by a Hezbollah member.
