Antonio Gates shines as Chargers handle Jets, keep playoff hopes alive

The incompletion with 3:07 to play in the fourth quarter unofficially ended the Jets' Sunday afternoon and when things officially ended after the Los Angeles Chargers gained a few first downs to run out the clock, they kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a 14-7 victory at MetLife Stadium. After Marcus Maye recovered the loose ball to earn the Jets possession, the NY crowd was rocking. For the Jets, quarterback Bryce Petty got his second start of the season after going 19 for 39 with a touchdown against the New Orleans Saints in Week 15. The Jets played without defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, who was a healthy inactive.

Petty was nothing short of terrible in a 14-7 loss to the Chargers on Christmas Eve. Here is the good, the bad and the ugly from the game... The Jets' onside kick was their first successful one to start a game since 2012.

The Jets failed to produce anything of substance in the first half, gaining just 133 yards of total offense as Petty went 9-of-20 for 81 yards.

In the first half, Bilal Powell led all Jets running backs with 59 yards on 7 carries. He was inaccurate, missing open receivers and failing to complete a pass longer than 16 yards. They were rewarded with a 57-yard touchdown run, tying the game at 7-7. Powell provided the Jets' only spark on offense, carrying 19 times for 145 yards.

Coach Anthony Lynn's team entered halftime with a 7-0 lead, thanks to a three-yard touchdown catch by Antonio Gates and a odd defensive stand to close the second quarter.

Keenan Allen is enjoying the best season of his career.

Los Angeles Chargers' Melvin Gordon (28) rushes for a touchdown as New York Jets inside linebacker Darron Lee (58) closes in during the second half of an NFL football game Sunday, Dec. 24, 2017, in East Rutherford, N.J. However, the ensuing drive did not produce points after Anderson's offensive-pass-interference penalty negated a 38-yard pass to the Los Angeles 2-yard line. But Matt Forte and Elijah McGuire each lost fumbles and Bryce Petty threw an interception as Gang Green turned the ball over three times.
