APNewsBreak: Rush steps down from Australian screen academy

According to The Associated Press, Geoffrey Rush has stepped down from his position as president of the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts after a claim of "inappropriate behavior".

Although the accusation is now unspecified, Rush denied it and phoned the management at the Sydney Theatre Company as soon as he became aware. And although the academy has accepted his voluntary resignation, Rush doesn't seem particularly happy about the series of events that lead to this - specifically, how the media reported on the allegation. He said, "I have made a decision to step aside in my ambassadorial role as president of the AACTA effective immediately". It said the complainant asked that the allegation be dealt with confidentially and did not want Rush notified or involved in any investigation. The STC didn't clarify what the allegation entailed either, leaving Rush to express his frustration with the process in his statement.

Rush has been working with the company for 35 years.

However, the complaint, claiming that Rush's alleged misbehavior lasted for months, was sent only after the play's run was over in January 2016. However, on Friday, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper anonymously cited two sources from the theater, saying that Rush was allegedly accused by another actor of touching her inappropriately.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star, 66, said the Sydney Theatre Company never informed him of the "unfounded" complaint, and has since stonewalled him over the allegations. The company did not say what action it had taken and it did not respond to questions about whether it would work with Rush in the future.

"The moment I became aware of rumours of a complaint I immediately phoned and spoke to senior management at the Sydney Theatre Company asking for clarification about the details of the statement".
