At Least Six Dead in 4-Alarm New York City Apartment Fire

The Fire Department of NY said earlier that 15 people were seriously injured in the fire near the Bronx Zoo.

The fire broke out in a block on Prospect Ave., in the Bronx borough in NY.

The FDNY tweeted that more than 160 firefighters were on the scene of the fire, located at a five-story walk-up apartment house in the Bronx.

Earlier, the FDNY announced that at least 15 people had been seriously injured, but the office of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio confirmed the fatalities shortly after.

The fire was extinguished around 8:30 p.m., PIX 11 reported. They were taken to Jacobi Medical Center and St. Barnabas Hospital, WABC reported. No smoke or flames were visible, but windows on the third floor were smashed and blackened.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
