Count shows fewer homeless people in Indiana

A government report has found that the number of homeless people across the United States increased for the first time since 2010.

In Massachusetts, local communities reported 17,565 experienced homelessness on a single night in 2017, a decrease of 10.4 percent since past year.

According to a recently-released report by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), there were roughly 554,000 homeless people across the country during local tallies conducted in January, up a little under 1 percent from 2010. That's a 6.2 percent drop since a year ago and a 15.7 percent decline since 2010.

"The collaborative work that has been done by our local, state and federal partners in MA towards ending homelessness is to be commended", said David Tille, HUD New England Regional Administrator.

2,330 were located in emergency shelters or transitional housing programs while 975 persons were unsheltered.

That put to an end six straight years of decline from 2010, when 637,000 Americans were homeless.

The unsheltered, chronically homeless more than doubled from 155 to 341 in one year and unsheltered homeless individuals rose 31 percent. OR saw a 5 percent increase this year, while in Washington the homeless population rose to 21,112 - an increase of 1 percent over the previous year. On a single night in January 2017, 383 Veterans were experiencing homelessness.

The annual count found about 300 unaccompanied homeless IN youth and children.

King County also ranks third in the number of unsheltered homeless - people living in vehicles, tents and on local streets.

Besides, in major cities, homelessness jumped by 5 percent in the a year ago, according to the HUD report. Currently, there are 385 homeless veterans marking a 4.25 percent decrease since 2016 and an overall decrease of 68.7 percent since 2010.

"In many high-cost areas of our country, especially along the West Coast, the severe shortage of affordable housing is manifesting itself on our streets", HUD Secretary Ben Carson said in a statement.

The latest homeless figures are based on a single night in January 2017 in which many local agencies seek to identify the number of individuals and families living in emergency shelters, transitional housing programs and in unsheltered settings, according to HUD. "This is not a federal problem-it's everybody's problem".
