Cyclone threat derails Gujarat election campaign

Cyclone Ockhi, which barrelled towards the Gujarat coast to hit areas near Surat around midnight, has come as a dampener to the election heat in Gujarat.

With Modi's Tuesday and Wednesday rallies being cancelled, the prime minister will now directly address rallies on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, The Times of India report added.

"To maintain unity within the Muslim community and to make Ahmed Patel the "wazir-e-alam" (grand minister) of Gujarat, we request the Muslim community to vote only for the Congress", the poster said in Gujarati with Rahul Gandhi and Patel along with the party symbol of Hand.

Campaigning for the first phase of Gujarat Assembly polls is being seen as a litmus test for both ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Opposition Congress. It was reported that his helicopter could not land in Morbi due to rough weather and the two subsequent rallies had to be postponed. Amit Shah's poll rallies in Rajula, Mahuva and Shihor on Tuesday were also cancelled.

BJP leader and Bhojpuri film star Manoj Tiwari was also expected to address a roadshow in Gujarat state capital Ahmedabad on Tuesday, but was forced to cancel this, local MLA Jagroopsinh Rajput said.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma today alleged that Congress vice- president Rahul Gandhi was giving a communal colour to his partys election campaign in Gujarat and trying to divide the society.

"Ahmed Patel has himself said this, but I would like to make it clear that such politics of putting up fake posters is not going to work in Gujarat as people here are intelligent and understand everything", he said. "Our Karyakartas should devote themselves to providing all possible assistance and stand shoulder to shoulder with fellow citizens", Modi tweeted.

Inspired by his tweet, BJP leaders in Surat suspended all campaign-related work and began shifting people to safer places, the MLA for Surat's Majura constituency, Harsh Sanghvi, said.
