Department of Homeland Security calls Pennsylvania shootings a 'terror attack'

The first shooting took place Friday afternoon outside the state capitol when El-Mofty allegedly fired on a Capitol Police officer, striking his cruiser, but leaving the officer unscathed.

Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse commended police for their "exceptional bravery", while Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf said he was "grateful for the swift reaction" of the officers, in statements obtained by WGAL.

Acting DHS Press Secretary Tyler Houlton released a statement calling the incident a "terror attack", according to CNN.

During the first incident, El-Mofty allegedly opened fire on a Capitol police officer from inside his own auto, hitting the officer's cruiser multiple times.

Marsico said that El-Mofty had recently returned to the US from a trip to the Middle East.

Dauphin County District Attorney Ed Marsico says 51-year-old Ahmed Aminamin El-Mofty fired at a capital police officer shortly after 4 p.m. Friday and later at a state trooper, wounding her. Marsico says both officers were in marked vehicles.

The DHS official said the shooting in Harrisburg highlights theTrump administration's concerns about extended family chain migration.

The trooper is "doing well", is in good condition and is expected to make a full recovery, Marsico said.

The suspect then chased the trooper to Harrisburg's residential Allison Hill section and opened fire toward state and local officers with two handguns.

Department of General Services spokesman Troy Thompson said an officer was driving on North Third Street and someone in a vehicle going the opposite direction fired multiple shots when the vehicles were in "close proximity".

A relative is expressing shock at the actions of a man police say fired at officers in several locations in Pennsylvania's state capital before he was shot and killed.

Authorities late Friday night named the suspect in three earlier shootings that left one Pennsylvania state trooper shot and the suspect killed in Harrisburg. Marsico asked for information from the public about El-Mofty.

Local authorities have not indicated whether they believe this incident to be terrorism.
