#EndSARS: IGP Orders Reorganization Of Anti-Robbery Squad, Probe Of Alleged Crimes

Former Vice President, Mr Atiku Abubaker, has joined other Nigerians calling for the immediate scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police.

The Nigerian Police Force Public Complaint Rapid Response Unit, PCRRU, had yesterday announced the opening of channels through which the public can report complaints about SARS.

According to a statement issued by police spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, Monday, SARS operatives will now be controlled by officers between the ranks of a superintendent of police to chief superintendent of police at state level.

Through the campaign, which started on Saturday with the hashtag #EndSARS, many Nigerians have accused personnel of the squad of extra-judicial killings and other forms of abuses.

"Undoubtedly, the SARS have been doing very well in fighting violent crimes such as Armed Robbery, Kidnappings and Cattle Rustling in the country in the recent time and this has resulted in drastic reduction of incidents of the mentioned violent crimes nationwide". The program, explained the statement, will be conducted in collaboration with civil society organizations, local and worldwide non-governmental organizations and other human rights bodies.

The IGP has also ordered an immediate probe into the allegations against the squad.

"In the new arrangement, a Commissioner of Police is now the overall head of the Federal Anti-Robbery Squad nationwide under the Department of Operations, Force Headquarters".

It added that the zonal and state commands as well as divisions will continue to operate anti-crime units, crime prevention and control squads to prevent and detect crimes and criminalities in their respective jurisdictions.

It would be recall that the teeming Nigerians had earlier registered their dissatisfactions with the SARS through various campaigns on social media.
