First Baby Born In US After Uterus Transplant At Dallas Hospital

It's the first time a baby has been born in the United States after a uterus transplant, with several prior live births having successfully taken place at Sweden's Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg. The new mother received a uterus transplant as part of a "landmark clinical trial conducted over the past year and a half".

Baylor Scott & White announced Friday that the first baby was born in the United States to a mother who received a uterus transplant at a Dallas hospital.

A news conference was scheduled Monday to discuss the Dallas baby's birth.

A woman gave birth following a uterus transplant for the first time in the United States, doctors at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas recently announced.

The Texas baby's birth was first reported by Time magazine, which said more womb transplants have been performed at Baylor since October 2016, and that another women who received a transplant is pregnant.

Although this is the very fist baby to be born in the U.S. using this method, eight other women have delivered babies via uterus transplants at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Sweden.

Last month, Penn Medicine in Philadelphia said it would start offering womb transplants. The womb and cervix are then removed from the donor and transplanted into the recipient. The first four cases involved "altruistic" donors - unrelated and unknown to the recipients.

Doctors hope that womb transplants will enable as many as several thousand women born without a uterus to bear children. The patient has a period of recovery before an embryo is implanted in the uterus. "Because carrying foreign body tissue can increase infection risk and requires lifelong antirejection medication, women in this study will undergo a hysterectomy after one or two successful pregnancies", reads a Baylor Scott & White Health publication outlining the clinical trial. A baby resulting from a uterine transplant would be delivered by cesarean section.

Prior to the transplant, the prospective mom is given fertility drugs to harvest her eggs, which are then fertilized and the resultant embryos frozen. The wombs are not meant to be permanent.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine issued a statement Friday calling the Dallas birth "another important milestone in the history of reproductive medicine". This could be because the women were born without the organ, lost the uterus or has one that no longer functions. The group is convening experts to develop guidelines for programs that want to offer this service.

The transplanted organ is not created to be permanent, since recipients have to take anti-rejection drugs.
