Flake warns: Trump headed for GOP primary challenge in 2020

Flake said he hasn't thought deeply about running against Trump in 2020.

In an extensive interview with ABC, outgoing GOP Senator Jeff Flake (AZ) lamented the state of the Republican Party, bluntly stating that crowds at President Donald Trump rallies remind him that his party is dying.

Flake has been fiercely critical of Trump, even while supporting parts of his agenda, like the new tax cuts.

Asked if he's open to running for president in 2020, Flake said, "I don't rule anything out, but it's not in my plans".

Congressman Charlie Dent, a leading Republican moderate in the House of Representatives who is also stepping down next year, on Sunday denounced what he characterised as the party's blind loyalty to Trump.

But Flake declined to directly answer when asked if he'd call the President a flat-out "liar". He faced an uphill battle as polls showed him facing a hard intra-party challenge from a fellow Republican endorsed by former Trump senior adviser Steve Bannon.

Karl pressed Flake, a frequent critic of President Trump and the current direction of the Republican Party, on whether Flake might see a challenge to the president via a GOP primary or from an Independent candidate.

Flake has made clear that he didn't vote for Trump in 2016. The senator has denounced Trump's executive order banning Muslims from several countries from entering the US, criticized Trump's penchant personal attacks on opponents, and charged that the current president's administration has overseen "the regular and casual undermining of our democratic norms and ideals". "NC county refuses to pay ransom to hackers Avalanche of Democratic senators say Franken should resign MORE on the far left of the Democratic Party", Flake said. Several women said Moore sought dates and romantic relationships with them when they were teenagers and he was in early 30s. He added that he's hopeful Bannon's role within the party is being marginalized.

"But if we continue to go down that path, just to drill down on the base, I think you'll have a lot of people realize there is no future for them in this party", he said. "It's not good for us".
