Flo Bjelke-Petersen, senator and wife of former Queensland premier, dies

"She will be sorely missed by all staff and residents of Orana".

Sir Joh received a state funeral when he died in 2005 and was buried on the family's property Bethany in Kingaroy.

When her husband was knighted in 1984, she took on the title of Lady and was fondly known to Queenslanders as "Lady Flo".

"As a Senator for Queensland for 12 years, Lady Flo worked tirelessly for the betterment of rural and regional Queensland".

She was known as a woman of strong conviction, crossing the floor on two government taxation bills.

Her passion for cooking led to her becoming a household name for her legendary pumpkin scones.

After her death was announced, tributes poured in from around the country.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk's office confirmed on Thursday she and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull had agreed to extend the offer of a funeral or memorial service to Lady Flo's family, depending on their wishes. "Rest In peace", he tweeted.

"Joh and Flo devoted their lives to Queensland and its success and dynamism owes so much to their vision and leadership", he tweeted.

She is survived by her son John, who has run unsuccessfully for state and federal parliament as a Nationals and Palmer United Party candidate.

The former National party senator and wife of Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen died at an aged care facility in Kingaroy on Wednesday afternoon at the age of 97.

She served as a National Party senator for Queensland from 1981 to 1993, with her political career briefly overlapping with that of her husband, who was premier from 1968 to 1987.

Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington said Lady Flo was a rock of the community.

Lady Flo was an Australian politician, writer, wife, mother, farmer and cook.

"She was a wonderful mentor to me and she always gave me wonderful encouragement and support".
