Galaxy S9 Rumors: Will New Samsung Phone Feature 512GB eUFS?

Samsung has announced the beginning of mass production of what it claims is the world's first 512 GB embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) solution for next-gen mobile devices.

Jaesoo Han, Executive Vice President of Memory Sales and Marketing at Samsung Electronics says the following about company's vision in paving the way for mobile phones to exhibit higher levels of internal storage.

Samsung said on Tuesday that it's now mass-producing 512GB flash storage chips that will enable smartphone makers to launch new smartphones that provide users with extra space for movies, music and apps. Samsung intends to bring this new storage capacity on next-generation devices, possibly the Samsung Galaxy S9. The company added it would expand production of 256Gb V-NAND chips, while it would be aggressive in ramping up the newer 64-layer 512Gb V-NAND chips.

Aside from the increased amount of storage, Samsung has also implemented new power management technology into the new solution in order to minimize its power consumption that comes from having more storage on the solution.

According to Samsung, users can save 130 files of 10-minute Ultra HD videos with the new chip, which is a significant development from 13 videos allowed by a 64 GB eUFS adopted on existing smartphones. Today's handsets are capable of shooting 4K resolution videos, taking detailed photos, and playing increasingly larger and more complex games.

Speed's sufficient for most application: Samsung's promised "sequential read and writes reaching up to 860 megabytes per second (MB/s) and 255MB/s respectively" and random data access speeds of 42,000 IOPS when reading and 40,000 IOPS when writing. Compare that to the 100 IOPS that conventional MicroSD cards read and you have about a 400x improvement in performance. No precise timeline of when these chips can be expected in mobile devices has been disclosed, beyond it being meant for upcoming flagship smartphones and tablets. Even though there is no mention of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9, it's possible that this new module will find its way into both or either phone. The top candidate right now is the Galaxy S9, which is expected to be Samsung's next flagship Android smartphone.
