Giants hire Gettleman as new GM

The New York Giants have found the new leader of their front office.

The New York Giants have taken a major step toward stabilizing the franchise with the hiring of David Gettleman as their next general manager. Both GM Jerry Reese and head coach Ben McAdoo were fired earlier this month.

Gettleman was Carolina's general manager from 2013-2016. In 2015, Gettleman was named The Sporting News' NFL Executive of the Year after the Panthers finished an NFL-best 15-1 record and advanced to Super Bowl 50.

But Gettleman always appeared to be the favorite, given the fact Accorsi was consulting on the hire (as he did when Gettleman got the Panthers job). More notably, the Panthers reached the Super Bowl following a 15-1 regular season in 2015.

Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio, Falcons assistant GM Scott Pioli (the son-in-law of legendary Giants coach Bill Parcells), Packers director of football operations Eliot Wolf, Seahawks co-director of player personnel Scott Fitterer and Vikings assistant GM George Paton were mentioned as possibilities for the job.

The Giants interviewed interim general manager Kevin Abrams, vice president of player evaluation Marc Ross, and former personnel executive Louis Riddick for the job before officially naming Gettleman to the position.

Gettleman interviewed on December 20 with Mara, Tisch and former general manager Ernie Accorsi, who consulted in the hiring process.

New England Patriots director of pro personnel Nick Caserio, Minnesota Vikings assistant general manager George Paton, and Seattle Seahawks co-director of player personnel Scott Fitterer were just some of the intriguing names NY could have attracted. Despite coming to Carolina with the team in a tough financial situation, the Panthers won three straight NFC South division titles.

In 2012, his final season with the Giants, Gettleman was the team's senior pro personnel analyst.

Since entering the league as a scout in 1986, Gettleman has been a part of seven Super Bowl teams, which includes Big Blue's last three Super Bowl appearances.
