Giroud admits Arsenal must do everything they can to keep Ozil

Ozil's contract at the Emirates expires at the end of this season.

An upturn in form for Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil at Arsenal may be down to the approaching transfer window, says Emmanuel Petit.

The 29-year-old is believed to want a significant rise on his current £140k-a-week wages along with a sizable signing on bonus.

As things stand, it appears that the Gunners have no intention of leaving their assist king and might even persuade the former Real Madrid man into signing a new contract. It is said that Arsenal are now "very, very, close" to a breakthrough. Ozil is a phenomenal footballer who is writing his own story that has nothing to do with Arsenal football club.

United want to convince the Gunners to sell in January to avoid watching him go for free next summer.

Initially, the Red Devils are said to have planned a move for the World Cup victor in the summer, but Mourinho is now hoping to lure Ozil from the Emirates, to which Don Balon claim for a fee between £17m and £22m in January.

Arsenal have been on a decent run of late, despite Saturday's disappointing home defeat to Manchester United, and they sit in fifth position in the Premier League table, having already qualified for the last 32 of the Europa League as group winners, with one game to spare.

Wenger was pleased with how Ozil changed the game and made Arsenal play their best football in the second half.

However, that doesn't always seem to be the case with the Premier League giants looking to sign one of their top targets in January itself rather than wait till next season and potentially lose out on the prospect.

Hence, it may be a redundant signing for Mourinho's men, who could better use resources to strengthen their squad elsewhere instead.
