Grenfell Tower fire: Survivors, Royal family attend memorial service for victims

Bereaved families and survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire were among around 1,500 people who attended St Paul's Cathedral on Thursday for a memorial service.

A recording was played of voices of survivors and members of the local community describing their experiences on the night of the fire and in the following days and months, including expressions of anger at the authorities. "I have never known anything like it in my life".

Also among the mourners were the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, who attended to show their solidarity with the bereaved and the survivors, as well as all those who had helped on the ground at the time of the tragedy.

The Al-Sadiq and Al-Zahra Schools Girls' Choir then sang out the poignant words "never lose hope". A proud Londoner, the star is a fierce advocate of justice for the Grenfell victims and their families. Firefighters managed to pull 78-year-old Fatima Jafari's husband, Ali Yawar Jafari, from the building, but the 82-year-old died at the scene. Still (my mother) cries, every day, every second when we are talking about our father, all the memories come out again.

"I wish nobody could have this in the whole life, in the whole world, I wish nobody would have to go through all these things".

She said she had asked for the event to be held at St Paul's Cathedral, exactly six months after the fire, and she hoped the names of the 53 adults and 18 children who died would be read out as a mark of respect and recognition.

After passing out Christmas presents and meeting with those impacted by the fire earlier this week, the expectant royal proved that the tragedy was top of mind, as her demure look mirrored the somber ambience.

He said the appointments were needed to "regain the trust of the survivors, the families and the community".

Emma Dent Coad, a Labour lawmaker for the neighborhood, said "emotions are still very raw" and the service was a "recognition that people from all walks of government are going to come down and grieve with them".
