Indonesia's FM Summons US Ambassador On President Trump's Statement

The Foreign Ministry has condemned the decision by United States President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, saying that as a democratic country, "the USA should know what democracy means".

With parliamentary elections scheduled for next year, Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak was more forceful.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said democracy means respecting worldwide law.

"Trump is drawing the ire of Muslims around the world", MUI Vice Chairman Zainut Tauhid said.

Wearing a traditional Palestinian scarf while delivering the speech, Retno emphasized that Indonesia and its people would always be committed to the Palestinian people.

US ally Israel and Palestine both claim Jerusalem as their capital. "And we urge the United Nations to convene a meeting to respond to the unilateral decision of the U.S".

A statement posted on the Indian Foreign Ministry website said: "India's position on Palestine is independent and consistent". With a large Muslim minority of well over 100 million people, India is led by a nationalist, Hindu-dominated party and historically has had good relations with Israel, with both countries gaining independence around the same time in the late 1940s.

Indonesia asserts that such action has violated the UN Security Council resolutions and would jeopardise the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.

Support also came from Tunisian Foreign Affairs Minister Khemaies Jhianoul, who presented at the forum.

In an address from the Bogor presidential palace, the leader commonly known as Jokowi said the move announced by President Donald Trump threatens the stability of the region.

Separately, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) on Thursday also strongly rejected the move to acknowledge Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and the US government's plans to relocate the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Earlier Wednesday, Trump announced his decision despite widespread global opposition to formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
