Jisha rape-murder convict Ameerul Islam gets death sentence

This was a case where reliable evidence was adduced by the prosecution based on DNA technology, which was a 100 per cent accurate method to identify the accused.

Ernakulam Principal Sessions court judge N Anil Kumar awarded death penalty to Islam, a migrant labourer from Assam, for committing murder of the law student at nearby Perumbavoor.

Kochi: Ernakulam chief judicial magistrate court pronounces death sentence for convict Ameerul Islam in Jisha rape and murder case.

On Wednesday, Ameerul said, "I didn't do anything". I doubt whether the translators for the police were as unbiased as those who appeared in court.

The court, while sentencing Ameerul to life imprisonment and a fine of ₹25,000 under Section 376A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) (rape), also awarded him a 10-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹25,000 under Section 376 (causing death or resulting in persistent vegetative state of victim) of the IPC.

The court on Tuesday held Ameer Ul guilty on all charges including rape and murder except for destruction of evidence and violations under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. She was found with severe injuries, out of which many were inflicted after she was murdered. Jisha's classmates who accessed the report revealed that her body was badly mutilated and sexually abused.

Ameerul Islam was arrested 50 days after the gruesome incident for allegedly murdering a 30-year-old Dalit woman at Perumbavoor in Kerala.

One in four rape cases in India ended in conviction in 2016 according to the National Crime Records Bureau data, the lowest rate since 2012.

The court trial lasted 85 days since the hearing began on April 4 this year. Fingerprints of over 5,000 people were examined by the SIT personnel who went through over 20 lakh telephonic conversations before reaching Islam. The investigation team succeeded in recovering the accused's DNA from the nail clipping of the woman beside bloodstain and saliva found in her clothes she wore on the day she was raped. The LDF government that came to power on May 25, 2016 reconstituted the investigation team within a week.
