JJ Watt named Sports Illustrated Co-Sportsperson of the Year

JJ Watt named Sports Illustrated Co-Sportsperson of the Year

In the weeks following Hurricane Harvey, Watt started a social media fundraising campaign that raised more than $37 million in relief aid.

It's truly unfortunate that Houston Texans' star defensive lineman J.J. Watt landed on season-ending injured reserve for a second straight season.

Sports Illustrated announced that Houston Texan and Wisconsin native J.J. Watt is their 2017 Sportsperson of the Year, along with the Houston Astros Jose Altuve.

Other athletes considered for the award included former National Football League quarterback Colin Kaepernick and WNBA star Maya Moore, both notable for being the face of social justice protests in their respective sports.

In Sports Illustrated's release, they explained Watt and Altuve's impact on the city of Houston.

While Watt was raising money, Altuve was giving the people of Houston something to cheer about.

At 5-foot-6, Jose Altuve is often the shortest person in photos, especially when he's standing next to other athletes.

"The city of Houston has treated me really good..." "I felt at that time that I owed them something". "The stories of these two athletes who care represent two very different paths, but they led to the same destination: #HoustonStrong". "So when they were having a hard time, I wanted to give something back to them". This year also marks the 30th anniversary of SI's original "Athletes Who Care" Sportsperson of the Year honor, which recognizes players who transcended sport alone.

They will accept the award on December 5th in New York City at the Barclays Center.
