Korea vows to boost nuclear capability after latest United Nations sanctions

The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved tough new sanctions against North Korea on Friday in response to its latest launch of a ballistic missile that Pyongyang says is capable of reaching anywhere on the USA mainland.

"We will further consolidate our self-defensive nuclear deterrence aimed at fundamentally eradicating the USA nuclear threats, blackmail and hostile moves by establishing the practical balance of force with the USA", the statement added.

This was the just latest round of tests, which have increased tension on the Korean peninsula, and yet another act of defiance after years of Security Council resolutions and rhetoric from Pyongyang.

It was North Korea's first official reaction to the sanctions, which target almost 90 percent of refined petroleum product exports to North Korea.

A Foreign Affairs Ministry statement said that Pyongyang criticised the punitive measures announced on Friday that further limit the country's access to petroleum products, ban its exports in several sectors and force its citizens working overseas to return to the country, reports Efe news.

It also bans sales of all industrial machinery, trucks, iron, steel and other metals to the North and added 15 Pyongyang officials to the United Nations sanctions blacklist for global visa ban and assets freeze.

North Korea said those who voted for the sanctions would face its wrath. "The United Nations Security Council just voted 15-0 in favor of additional Sanctions on North Korea".

-All countries are banned from exporting industrial machinery, transportation vehicles, iron, steel and other metals to North Korea.

North Korea's nuclear weapons are a self-defensive deterrence not in contradiction of global law, its foreign ministry added.

"The difference between the new resolution and the original United States proposal reflects the will of China and Russian Federation to prevent war and chaos on the Korean Peninsula". Pyongyang said it had successfully tested a new intercontinental ballistic missile that put the U.S. mainland within range of its nuclear weapons, which it described as a self-defensive deterrence.

-All countries are banned from providing insurance or re-insurance to North Korean-affiliated ships believed to be involved in illegal smuggling and sanctions evasion and are required to de-register these vessels.

The resolution reaffirms the council's support for a resumption of six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear program aimed at the peaceful denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

The sanctions are the latest effort to get the regime of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to negotiate and eventually abandon development of nuclear weapons.
