Lorde Cancels Her Concert in Israel Due to Political Protest

Thousands of Israelis demonstrated against government corruption as police move to wrap up an investigation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on suspicions of bribery.

Speaking at the Jerusalem rally, former defence minister Moshe Yaalon said corruption anxious him more than anything else. A reporter for the right-wing Makor Rishon newspaper tweeted several pictures from the scene, including the one of the protester with the guillotine. Former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated in 1995 after being portrayed as a Nazi at anti-government demonstrations, and President Reuven Rivlin took to Twitter on Sunday to blast the guillotine display as "clear incitement" to violence.

If indicted, the four-term prime minister would be under pressure to resign or call new elections.

Organizer Yoaz Hendel said the Jerusalem protest was "in support of law enforcement".

The poll added that 59 percent of people viewed the investigation as legitimate, while 27 percent called it a "witch hunt" against the prime minister.

Several hundred more attended a right-wing anti-corruption rally in Jerusalem, with speeches headlined by former defence minister Moshe Yaalon.

"It's a greater danger than the Iranian threat, (Lebanese movement) Hezbollah, (Palestinian movement) Hamas or the Islamic State" jihadist group, he said of corruption, without naming Netanyahu.

"I personally asked organizers that no one here speak against the prime minister", he said.

The latest protests were inspired by a coalition push for legislation that would block police investigators from informing prosecutors whether they believe there are grounds for indictment in any particular case and from publicizing information or leaking conclusions to the media.

Netanyahu has been questioned seven times in the past year in two corruption probes, which he says are part of a witch hunt carried out by his opponents.

Netanyahu has denied wrongdoing in all instances.

The first investigation, known as Case 1000, involves allegations that Netanyahu received cigars, champagne, cash and other gifts from Israeli-born Hollywood mogul Arnon Milchan and Australian billionaire James Packer.

The news was confirmed by the largest Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth on Sunday (December 24).
