NAACP Tells Trump Not To Attend Civil Rights Museum Opening

The NAACP said Tuesday that President Donald Trump should cancel his plans to attend the opening of a MS civil rights museum, saying his appearance would be divisive. "We have not received confirmation from the White House that he will be able to attend Saturday's event, but would very much like to have him here", said Bryant's spokesperson, Clay Chandler.

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History has scheduled civil-rights veterans Myrlie Evers and Congressman John Lewis to speak as well as Gov. Phil Bryant and former Govs. The museums dive deep into the state's history as well as the many significant parts of the Civil Rights Movement that happened in Jackson and throughout the state.

NAACP President Derrick Johnson said in a sharply worded statement that Trump's attendance would be an "affront" to the movement commemorated by the museum.

President Donald Trump plans to visit MS for the state's bicentennial and to help open two museums, including one dedicated to civil rights. The president said that both white supremacist groups and counter-protestors were at fault for the violence that ensued in Virginia in August. Trump has also been critical of NFL players who kneel during the national anthem to protest police violence and racism.
