NatWest in Diss to close after customers choose to go digital

"Our community bankers will get to know local communities, engage with local groups and provide training and education on issues such as fraud and scams protection in their local area".

The branch on High Street in Harpenden will close on Tuesday, May 22, 2018; the branch on Watling Street in Radlett will close on Tuesday, June 12.

Earlier this week Lloyds Bank announced they would be closing branches in Acle, Bungay, Halesworth and Southwold.

It is among 197 NatWest and 62 Royal Bank of Scotland branches earmarked for closure by mid-2018, with the loss of 680 jobs.

NatWest said it provides alternative ways to bank, including online and mobile, telephony, video banking, at a Post Office, at ATMs, mobile branches, community bankers, TechXpert, or other branches for customers to visit.

The Oundle branch will close on June 21 next year and the Stamford branch will shut on May 17 next year.

"In response to this, we have confirmed the locations of some Yorkshire branches which will close next year".

A NatWest spokesman said: "We are communicating with our customers affected by the closure and proactively contacting vulnerable customers and regular branch users". Since 2014, the number of customers using our branches across the United Kingdom has fallen by 40 per cent. "Fifty-nine per cent of customers are now choosing to bank digitally with us on a regular basis instead".

In Stamford, 89 per cent of customers are already banking in other ways locally, transactions have reduced by 42 per cent since 2012 with 66 customers now visiting the branch on a weekly basis. Customers can choose from a range of digital, face-to-face and local options.

"Since 2014 the number of customers using our branches across the United Kingdom has fallen by 40 per cent and mobile transactions have increased by 73 per cent over the same period".

The bank, which is still still 72 per cent owned by the taxpayer, has blamed the cuts on customers moving to bank online or on mobile.

Trade union Unite called the cuts "savage", with national officer Rob MacGregor saying: "This announcement will forever change the face of banking in this country resulting in over a 1,000 staff losing their jobs and hundreds of High Streets without any banking facilities".
