NFL Reportedly Considering Changing Targeting Rule To Mimic College Football

"You can just see it now, you watch the college games and they kicking players out for clean hits because they can't tell what is a clean hit from certain angles". Count Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner among those who would rather the National Football League avoid adding that type of regulation to its game.

The NFL will look into adding targeting as a specific category for video review.

"It's awful", Wagner said in a press conference Wednesday.

The college rule includes a player being ejected from a game should officials deem that he in fact targeted an opposing player.

The latter idea is related to the incident during the New England Patriots' Week 13 game against the Buffalo Bills when Rob Gronkowski threw an elbow at Tre'Davious White after the play was dead following a White interception.

The NFL is considering changing the current targeting rule this offseason.

Cincinatti Bengals safety George Iloka was also suspended a single game for his illegal hit to the helmet of Steelers receiver Antonio Brown, but his suspension was reduced to a $34,464.50 fine on Wednesday. With the college rule, all helmet-to-helmet hits will be reviewable, and it could significantly cut down on the number of hits we see per year where the helmet is used as a weapon.

"I just think there is a better way than bringing that rule into [the league]", Wagner said. "I feel the penalties have to be a little bit more consistent. What's a hit that's worthy of ejection?" Troy Vincent, the league's football operations chief, says it is on the agenda to discuss with the competition committee and the players' union after the season.
