Nissan To Start Robot Taxi By 2020

Using Nissan's Intelligent Mobility vision, and data collected on electrified and connected vehicles, plus DeNA's expertise in the development and operation of driverless mobility services using the Internet and artificial intelligence, both companies are now ready to test their product on the roads of the Minatomirai district of Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan from March 5, 2018, to March 18, 2018.

The carmaker will put two Leaf electric cars, equipped with sensors and cameras and autonomous driving software developed by DeNA Co., on roads in a designated part of Yokohama, where Nissan is based.

An automobile manufacturer, Nissan aims to have a fully automated ride service in Japan by the early 2020s.

Japanese automaker Nissan Motor and DeNA have unveiled a new robo-vehicle mobility service, Easy Ride, in Japan.

Nissan joins a growing band of carmakers trialling self-drive cars, including General Motors and Volvo.

"With "more freedom of mobility" as its concept, Easy Ride is envisioned as a service for anyone who wants to travel freely to their destination of choice in a robo-vehicle", Nissan said in a statement.

During tests, there will be a staff member in the driver's seat to comply with Japanese law.

In the app, the option for the scenic route to your destination will be also available.

Meanwhile, Japanese robotics maker ZMP is working with a Tokyo taxi operator to develop self-driving taxis for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The fast-growing "pay-per-ride" market is becoming a battleground between automakers, tech firms such as Alphabet Inc and Uber Technologies Inc [UBER.UL] and a barrage of start-ups as ride-sharing services threaten to hit demand for auto ownership.
