NJC sacks Justice Ademola, shuns his resignation letter

The judge's abrupt decision to retire came as a shock to staff and lawyers, who had earlier entered appearance in eight cases before the court, including a judgment involving Abimel Ibrahim and seven other police officers accused of Boko Haram activities in the North East. Family members of the police officers cried in the court, as hundreds of other cases have been thrown into limbo.

Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court has tendered his letter of voluntary retirement from the bench.

The judge was due for statutory retirement in March 2018, but he suddenly turned in his letter of voluntary retirement dated December 6, 2017.

The judge on Thursday announced his exit from the Bench.

Earlier on Thursday, lawyers, journalists and the defendants facing the terrorism charges scheduled for judgment, were turned back byJustice Ademola's court's officials.

"This letter supersedes my previous notice of retirement from the Federal High Court of Nigeria, dated 25/09/2017".

Justice Ademola was of the judges arrested by the Department of State Service past year October.

The judge was charged alongside his wife and a senior advocate of Nigeria, Joe Agi, at an Abuja Division of the Federal Capital Territory High Court.

But the trio were exonerated in a judgment delivered by the trial Judge, Justice Adamu Bello, having upheld their no-case submission early this year.

The Federal Government had alleged that Ademola, who is a grandson to a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, had in the discharge of his official duties, received bribe from Agi to the tune of N38.5m and perverted the course of Justice.

The Judge had contended that allowing the NJC to go ahead with the investigation when the petition had been withdrawn, would amount to gross abuse of his rights.

A statement by NJC's Director of Information, Mr. Soji Oye, said on Thursday that the Council at its meeting on Wednesday recommended the two judges to President Muhammadu Buhari for compulsory retirement.
