North Korea Calls Sanctions 'An Act Of War'

North Korea Calls Sanctions 'An Act Of War'

In this Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017 photo, Pyongyang residents welcome contributors to their country's sixth underground nuclear test, in Pyongyang, North Korea. He further added: "Their plan is to put a satellite equipped with cameras and telecommunication devices into orbit".

"North Korea has recently manufactured a satellite and named it Kwangmyongsong-5", the JoongAng Ilbo quoted the official as saying".

North Korea reportedly intends to continue to push for its "peaceful" space development programme to "help contribute to the dreams and ideals of mankind". The statement sparked speculation by outside observers that Kim Jong Un's regime's space development program could be intended for concealing weapon tests.

Pyongyang launched their Kwangmyongsong-4 satellite in February 2016, which most in the worldwide community viewed as a disguised ballistic missile test.

In a commentary published on Monday and titled "peaceful space programs are sovereign countries' legitimate rights", the daily said Pyongyang's satellite launches "absolutely correspond" with worldwide laws concerning space development.

"Though the North argues for its right for space development, it could be part of efforts to build its rationale for launching long-range rockets", Cho Sung-ryul, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Strategy in Seoul, said, according to Yonhap.

The Rodong Sinmin, the official newspaper of the North's ruling Workers' Party, claimed that with its launch of the Kwangmyongsong-4 satellite in February previous year, Pyongyang has "in earnest" entered the stage of developing application satellites.

The Moscow chief said he can act as mediator between the United States and North Korea amid the ongoing war of words between the two.

South Korea's government said North Korea could potentially mark the 69th founding anniversary on Saturday with its third test of a developmental intercontinental ballistic missile.

The U.S. drafted the most recent resolution to impose sanctions on North Korea, which was unanimously passed by the United Nations Security Council on Friday. But while the sanctions are meant to curb nuclear development, Sunday's statement implies they won't.
