North Korea FM: US Threats Make War Unavoidable

North Korea's foreign ministry blamed the drills and "confrontational warmongering" by USA officials for making war inevitable. "The outbreak of war is not in any side's interest. The ones that will suffer the most are ordinary people".

"We know that North Korea wants above all to talk to the United States about guarantees for its security".

Russia also has communication channels open with North Korea and is ready to exert its influence on the country, the RIA news agency quoted Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov as saying on Tuesday.

Lavrov said he had passed on Pyongyang's desire for direct talks to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson when the two met on the sidelines of a conference in Vienna on Thursday.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said last night's drills simulated land strikes at a military field near South Korea's eastern coast during a drill with USA and South Korean fighter jets.

They entered the Korean Air Defense Identification Zone (KADIZ) through the sky over the waters south of Jeju Island and conducted simulated bombing drills over the Yellow Sea near North Korea and China, according to the official.

White House National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said at the weekend that the possibility of war with North Korea was "increasing every day".

Moscow also believes it is Washington's saber-rattling and regular military drills in the region that are "provoking Pyongyang into taking some rash action" after months of restraint, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said following the country's latest ballistic missile test. Threats from various U.S. officials are serving the same goal, Lavrov added. The Pentagon has mounted repeated shows of force after North Korean tests.

But with the USA using its best planes to message North Korea, and Pyongyang demonstrating missiles that experts assess can hit anywhere in the U.S., it's unclear just how much higher tensions on the Korean Peninsula could escalate.

While B-1Bs are no longer equipped to carry nuclear weapons of their own, they would be key to any strike targeting major North Korean facilities, he said.

United Nations political affairs chief Jeffrey Feltman arrived in Pyongyang for a four-day visit Tuesday, the first time a high-ranking United Nations official visited the country since 2012. Feltman met North Korean foreign minister Ri Yong Ho on Thursday, North Korea's official KCNA news agency said.
