North Korea says United States threats make war unavoidable, China urges calm

The combined B-1 and F-22 drill represents a step up in the normal tit-for-tat between the U.S. and North Korea.

North Korea has warned nuclear war is now inevitable after the United States staged huge drills involving hundreds of advanced warplanes. The chilling prediction comes after two US B-1B nuke capable bombers were confirmed to be among aircraft staging large-scale aerial exercises near the hermit state.

But North Korea has a problem there.

The US responded to North Korea's latest missile launch with a simulated bomb run from a B-1B Lancer bomber and an F-22 in a marked escalation in military signaling.

A state-run newspaper in northeastern China's Jilin city, which is near the border with North Korea, published a full page of "common sense" advice that was meant to keep its readers alive in the case of attack.

Those areas overlap with Japanese and South Korean airspace.

Quoting an unnamed spokesman from the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Country of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (CPRC and DPRK, respectively), KCNA referred to the US and South Korean military might as "puppet forces" and warned that a planned December 4. aerial drill is a "war rehearsal [that] is just a grave military provocation".

China's vice minister of Foreign Affairs Zheng Zeguang was to meet Matt Pottinger, the head of Asian affairs at the White House's National Security Council, on Thursday to discuss North Korea and trade, a senior United States official said.

It did nothing to stop Pyongyang carrying out its biggest intercontinental ballistic missile test to date earlier this week, alongside claims that the weapon was capable of hitting the United States mainland.

In September, after North Korea's sixth and largest nuclear test, B-1Bs flew further north along North Korea's coast than at any time in the past 17 years. Additional major sanctions will be imposed on North Korea today.

Washington has said it remains open to talks if North Korea demonstrates it is serious about giving up its nuclear weapons but that its recent activities showed it was not.

US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham urged the Pentagon on Sunday to start moving US military dependants out of South Korea, saying conflict with North Korea was getting close.

On Wednesday, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, raised doubts about USA participation in the Olympic Winter Games in South Korea in February, telling Fox News that Washington was concerned about its citizens.

"The remaining question now is: when will the war break out?" it said in a statement carried by North Korea's official KCNA news agency.
