Over 2700 personnel dismissed with new emergency decree in Turkey

Over 2700 personnel dismissed with new emergency decree in Turkey

The new decree also reinstated 115 people who had been dismissed from their jobs.

Turkish police arrested 15 senior military officers in an investigation into the network of a U.S. based cleric who Ankara accuses of orchestrating last year's attempted coup, state-run Anadolu news agency said on Friday.

The government also announced the closing of 17 institutions, including two independent newspapers and one health clinic, according to the Gazette.

More than 140,000 people including judges, lawyers and academics have been sacked or suspended since a failed coup in July past year, while some 55,000 people have been arrested over suspected links to US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen and the coup attempt.

FETO is accused of a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary.

Some 50,000 people have been arrested and more than 110,000 civil servants have been dismissed for alleged links to Gulen or militant groups in a crackdown since then. Turkey claims Gulen and his Hizmet (service) movement, which it calls the "Fethullah Terrorist Organisation", ordered and conducted the attempted coup. Critics accuse the government of using state of emergency legislation to target its opponents, including opposition journalists and pro-Kurdish critics. Male defendants will now be required to wear "almond and gray-colored uniforms".

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to ensure that Gulen supporters wore uniforms similar to those worn by prisoners at Guantanamo Bay when appearing in court. Justice ministry officials would also work out a dress code for female defendants.
