Patagonia joins lawsuits challenging Trump's monument plans

It marks the first time in a half century that a president has undone these types of land protections. Using the same reasoning as for reducing the size of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Trump wants to cut down the approximately 1.35 million acres, designated as federally protected land by former President Barack Obama on December 28, 2016, by over 1.15 million acres, down to only 201,876 acres.

"Unfortunately, previous administrations have ignored the standard and used the law to lock up hundreds of millions of acres of land and water under strict government control". All five tribes make up The Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition, which lobbied for the establishment of Bears Ears and works to conserve the area.

President Trump argued that the people of Utah know best how to care for their land.

Trump says Utah's lands should not be managed by "distant bureaucrats in Washington" and said he was reversing federal overreach. "No one will look back on this decision in 15, 25 or 50 years and say Trump did the right thing by protecting less of this magnificent place".

Roughly 3,000 demonstrators lined up near the State Capitol to protest President Trump's announcement.

Elected officials in Utah were against the monument designation for Bears Ears and have said they thought the monument was too big.

Earthjustice is representing eight organizations in a suit charging that the president violated the 1906 Antiquities Act by stripping monument protections from this national treasure: The Wilderness Society, the Grand Canyon Trust, the Sierra Club, Defenders of Wildlife, Great Old Broads for Wilderness, Center for Biological Diversity, WildEarth Guardians and Western Watersheds Project.

"As news rolled out today, the Escalante & Boulder Chamber of Commerce, like our friends and neighbors, are just learning the specifics to the potentially illegal move to reduce the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument boundaries, while establishing a new National Park?"

Republican Rep. Chris Stewart says his legislation would create a modest national park at Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument that's about 156 square miles (404 square kilometers). The sites were among 27 that Trump ordered U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to review this year. He was accompanied on Air Force One by Utah Senators Mike Lee and Orrin Hatch, who is contemplating whether to run for re-election next year when he'll turn 84.

Utah's Republican leaders had pushed for Trump's action, saying the monuments closed off the land to energy development and other access. The Antiquities Act also expressly states that presidents should protect the important sites while using the smallest amount of land possible. He said the decision would "give back your voice".

"Patagonia's business relies directly on public lands, like Indian Creek in Bears Ears, which hosts world-class climbing", Marcario wrote.

Hatch, who introduced President Trump, said that when "you talk, this president listens" and that President Trump promised to help him with "federal overreach".

As expected, environmental and Native American groups were outraged.

It also would almost halve the size of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, also in southern Utah, splitting it into three units. Elizabeth Warren, calling her "Pocahontas".

Zinke has also recommended to President Trump that Nevada's Gold Butte and Oregon's Cascade-Siskiyou monuments be reduced in size, though details remain unclear. The former Montana congressman's plan would allow logging at a newly designated monument in ME and more grazing, hunting and fishing at two sites in New Mexico.

Environmental and conservation groups joined the battle Monday and began filing lawsuits that ensure that Trump's announcement is far from the final chapter of the yearslong public lands battle.
