President, First Lady take part in lighting National Christmas Tree

This week, MSNBC's Chris Hayes chose to troll President Trump, who has declared that he's bringing back "Merry Christmas", by playing a compilation of former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama saying "Merry Christmas". Thousands of people crowd together to watch the president flip the switch to "officially" kick off the holiday season.

"With Trump as your president, we are going to be celebrating Merry Christmas again, and it's going to be done with a big, lovely tax cut." .

The lighting of the national tree is a holiday tradition going back 95 years when President Calvin Coolidge lit a tree in front of 3,000 spectators in 1923, according to the official National Christmas Tree Lighting page.

Forget a grip-and-grin photo with the president or even an autographed "Make America Great Again" hat - there's a new status symbol indicating that someone has a close-and-personal relationship with President Trump: Check for a glittery gold-colored ornament bearing the presidential coat of arms hanging from the Christmas tree.

The White House, in all its Christmas cheer, decided not to invite Chris Johnson to their annual holiday party which is, the reporter said, "just kind of consistent with the policy of the administration to exclude LGBTQ people". First Lady Melania Trump pushed the button.

But a quick search of the Web and social media returns many examples of when Obama used the phrase "Merry Christmas".

The former president also shared "Merry Christmas" greetings on his Twitter account. "The man who brought "Merry Christmas" back to our nation's capital - and you did, sir".

On Wednesday, Donny T. delivered a tax reform speech in St. Charles, Missouri, that started and ended with a focus on Christmas. So when he didn't get an invite, he emailed the White House to ask why.
