PS4 Sales Top 70 Million, Sony Says 130 PSVR Titles in Development

Interviewed by Nikkei, Takeda informed the following: "At our gaming business, sales of the PlayStation 4 are strong heading into the holidays. Our business model involves selling both the game console and the software for it, so we're working to get more customers paying continuously for content, for example through paid subscription services".

What the executive meant when he said Sony can't ignore its longtime rival Nintendo is up for some debate. It's still a far cry from the PS2's lifetime sales of over 155 million.

The PlayStation 4 has now sold an impressive 70m units worldwide.

The milestone was achieved just over four years after the console went on sale, in November 2013. The nine-month timespan is actually quite precise since the latest Media Create release is related to the week ending on December 3rd, with a total bounty for Nintendo's new console of 2.522.298 units. Nintendo recently re-forecast the console's year one sales from 10 million to about 17 million.

As for Sony's virtual reality headset, the PlayStation VR cumulatively sold through over 2 million units worldwide and sold over 12.2 million copies of its 150 titles via retail and digital sales as of December 3.

Sony can not fail to notice it, even if PS4 is doing very well with regards to sales. While the console has hit a solid stride, its first year and a half were extremely sluggish due to the lack of games dedicated to the Japanese market, following by a large cross-generation period in which games released also on PS3 reduced the attractiveness of the new console.
