Putin Announces He'll Seek Reelection as Russian President in 2018

Vladimir Putin has declared his intention to run for a fourth term as president of Russian Federation.

"I will put forward my candidacy for the post of president of the Russian Federation", said Putin during a meeting with factory workers in the city of Nizhny Novgorod on Wednesday afternoon.

Putin served two terms as president from 2000 to 2008 before becoming the country's prime minister. "There's no better place or opportunity to put my candidacy forward".

Putin's approval ratings top 80 percent, making him certain to win an easy first-round victory. In late November, United Russia Chairman Dmitry Medvedev pledged "unconditional" support for Putin if he chooses to run. Blue-collar workers and state employees form the core of his support base.

Russian Federation will move only forward and no one will stop its advance, Putin pointed out, adding: "Certainly, the foundation is always laid by people like you, the toilers in the broadest meaning of the word, comprising workers, scientists, engineers, designers, teachers and doctors", he emphasized adding such people "are not just the backbone of our country, but they are our country, they are Russian Federation". Several hours earlier, he was asked about his intentions in Moscow and signaled that he would run but stopped short of declaring his bid. He said he would decide shortly if he would seek another six-year term. He's expected to make the move after the upper house of parliament formally launches the race later this month.

The veterans of past campaigns - Communist chief Gennady Zyuganov, ultranationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky and liberal leader Grigory Yavlinsky - all have declared their intention to run.

The most visible Putin foe, Alexei Navalny, also wants to run, even though a conviction he calls politically motivated bars him from joining the campaign.
